Zebrafish homologs of genes within 16p11.2, a genomic region associated with brain disorders, are active during brain development, and include two deletion dosage sensor genes.

Proximal Deletion, Proximal Duplication,

All,

Researchers used zebrafish to study the 25 genes in the 16p11.2 region and found that nearly all of them play important roles in brain development, and identified two specific genes (ALDOA and KIF22) that may be key drivers of autism and intellectual disability symptoms when a copy of this region is deleted.
