Researchers discovered a common genetic variant within the proximal 16p11.2 region—a region already known to increase psychosis risk when duplicated—that is linked to higher risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and also associated with lower body weight, which may help families understand why duplication of this region affects both mental health and BMI.
